3 Days in Rome Itinerary

The Colosseum in Rome, the first stop in our 3 days in Rome itinerary

3 Days in Rome Itinerary

Rome is probably the most popular city that I book for my clients, and it’s usually the first stop on a multi-city tour of the country. If you are looking for a 3 days in Rome itinerary, I have so many suggestions on how to make the most of your trip!

Need some help planning your trip to Rome and Italy? As a Virtuoso travel advisor, I have all the contacts and all the tips to make your stay as seamless and enjoyable as possible. (You can read my bio here.) Just click the big orange button below and provide some basics so we can schedule a call.

Day 1: Explore Ancient Rome at The Colosseum and Surrounding Sites

Begin Day 1 of your 3 days in Rome itinerary at the Colosseum, one of Rome's most iconic landmarks. I strongly recommend booking a tour in advance and arriving early to avoid the crowds. The Colosseum opened in 80 AD and was the site of gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. A guided tour will give you deeper insights into its fascinating history and architectural design. (And hey, don’t forget to watch Gladiator with Russell Crowe before your trip too!)

After exploring the Colosseum, take a stroll to Palatine Hill. This area is believed to be the birthplace of Rome. Walk among the ruins of ancient palaces and enjoy stunning views over the Roman Forum and the city beyond.

Next, head down to the Roman Forum, the political, social, and economic center of ancient Rome. Wandering through its ruins, you can imagine the activities of Romans during its heyday. Make sure to visit the Temple of Saturn and the Senate House (Curia) as you walk through this remarkable site.

Before you end your first day in Rome, I recommend taking a golf cart tour of Rome. This is a super fun way to cover a lot of ground in the city and get a great overview of everything. The golf car will take you past iconic sites like the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona.

End your first day with a leisurely dinner in the Monti district, known for its charming streets and authentic Italian restaurants. Try a local trattoria for some traditional Roman dishes like spaghetti all’amatriciana or cacio e pepe.

The Vatican museum, the first stop on 2 day of your 3 days in rome itinerary.

Day 2: Visit The Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and The Catacombs

Dedicate your second day of your 3 days in Rome itinerary to exploring the spiritual heart of Catholicism in Rome. Start at the Vatican Museum. I strongly recommend pre-booking an early morning guided tour so you can avoid the crowds and understand the vast collection of art and historical artifacts, including the stunning Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo. Take your time to appreciate the various galleries, especially the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms.

After visiting the museums, make your way to St. Peter’s Basilica. As one of the largest churches in the world, St. Peter's is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Climb to the dome for breathtaking views of the Vatican City and Rome. (The climb gets kinda tough as you get to the top so I do not recommend this for anyone with mobility issues.)

If time allows, consider visiting the Vatican Crypt, located below St. Peter's Basilica, where many popes are laid to rest. This serene setting offers a moment to reflect on the history intertwined with this sacred space.

In the afternoon, if you’re keen on exploring further, visit the Catacombs. The Catacombs of San Callisto or San Sebastiano offer a fascinating glimpse into early Christian burial practices. Note that a guided tour is recommended for this experience to fully appreciate the historical significance.

After a day of exploration, head to the Spanish Steps for some retail therapy! Check out all the iconic Italian brands — Gucci, Prada, and more. Then unwind that evening with dinner in the Trastevere neighborhood. The cobbled streets and lively atmosphere make it a perfect spot to enjoy a meal. Check out local favorites like supplì (fried rice balls) and pizza al taglio. And don’t forget to order the house wine!

Visit the lively Campo de' Fiori market in Rome on the third day of your 3 days in Rome itinerary.

Day 3: Explore the Food Scene in Rome

No trip to Rome would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Start your final day of your 3 days in Rome itinerary at the Campo de’ Fiori market. This bustling market is perfect for immersing yourself in local culture. Stroll through stalls filled with fresh produce, cheese, meats, and a variety of Italian specialties.

There are many cooking classes that will combine a market visit with a cooking class, so that is what I recommend. Many local chefs offer hands-on experiences where you can learn to prepare traditional Roman dishes. From handmade pasta to classic sauces, a cooking class is a fun way to delve into Italy’s rich culinary traditions. It’s also a great way to meet other travelers.

Once your culinary lesson wraps up, you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labor by savoring the meal you prepared. A shared meal with fellow participants often leads to enjoyable conversations and new friendships.

In the afternoon, get some gelato and take a walk along the Tiber River. Or consider strolling through the charming streets of the Jewish Ghetto to continue your culinary journey. Here, you can sample Jewish-Roman specialties like carciofi alla giudia (fried artichokes). (Stanley Tucci did an entire episode on Rome where he visits the historic Jewish quarter. I recommend watching this before your trip!)

As your day winds down, talk to your hotel about making dinner reservations. A meal featuring local wines and a selection of Roman dishes will be the perfect way to conclude your trip.
