Morocco…Shopping in Marrakesh, Sleeping under the Stars in the Sahara
Before I dive into this week’s newsletter, I’m thinking about expanding! If you are a well-traveled soul with an affinity for small details, please email me at hello@antidotetravel.com.
But now…let’s talk about Morocco!
There are many places in this world that I want to go back to. But Morocco is really tops on the list. I had a wonderful few days in Marrakesh and Essaouira a few years ago. We did all the shopping and all the eating. Moroccan food is so distinct and interesting…and delicious! So this week, I invite you to embark on a sensory journey through Morocco…from the bustling souks of Marrakech to the serene dunes of the Sahara, Morocco offers an unparalleled travel experience at a very nice price.
Marrakesh: The Ochre City
Why it's a must: Marrakesh is a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. The heart of the city, Jemaa el-Fna square, comes alive at night with storytellers, musicians, and food stalls. The city also boasts stunning palaces, gardens, and a labyrinthine medina. Honestly, the shopping in Marrakech is insane!! And the color of the buildings…so beautiful.
Five-Star Virtuoso Property: Royal Mansour Marrakesh. This opulent hotel, with its private riads and impeccable service, offers an unparalleled luxury experience. This is a Virtuoso property where I can upgrade your stay with complimentary breakfast for two, a hotel credit, and more. Of course, you can always live out your Inventing Anna dreams at La Mamounia. Remember, never book a 5 star hotel without a Virtuoso travel advisor.
Must-Try Dish: Tanjia, a slow-cooked lamb dish marinated with spices and preserved lemons.
Fes: The Cultural Heart
Why it's a must: Fes is the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its ancient medina, Fes el Bali, is a maze of narrow alleyways, artisan workshops, and historic mosques.
Five-Star Virtuoso Property: Palais Faraj Suites and Spa. This beautifully restored riad combines traditional Moroccan architecture with modern comforts.
Must-Try Dish: Pastilla, a savory-sweet pie filled with pigeon or chicken, almonds, and spices.
Chefchaouen: The Blue Pearl
Why it's a must: Nestled in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is a picturesque town known for its blue-washed buildings. The town's laid-back atmosphere and stunning views make it a perfect place to relax and unwind.
Amazing Tours and Experiences: Consider this 10 day private tour of Morocco.
Must-Try Dish: Tagine with goat cheese and figs, a local specialty that combines sweet and savory flavors.
Merzouga: Gateway to the Sahara
Why it's a must: Merzouga is a small town on the edge of the Sahara Desert, famous for its Erg Chebbi dunes. A camel trek into the desert and a night under the stars is an unforgettable experience. Total bucket list trip!
Amazing Tours and Experiences: Check out this 15 day group tour of Morocco.
Must-Try Dish: Madfouna, a traditional Berber pizza cooked in a sand oven.
Essaouira: The Windy City
Why it's a must: Essaouira is a charming coastal town with a relaxed atmosphere. The town's medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its beaches are popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. There is also some great shopping here. When I visited Essaouira a few years back, all my friends and I did was eat and shop!
Amazing Tours and Experiences: Check out this short seaside tour of Morocco.
Must-Try Dish: Seafood tagine, a local specialty that showcases the fresh flavors of the Atlantic coast.
