7 Unexplored European Destinations

I was just watching the TODAY show this morning and they were talking about something I’ve been warning everyone about: Italy and Greece are tops on the list for every traveler these days, so the main hotspots — Tuscany, Amalfi, Cinque Terre, Mykonos, and Santorini — are packed. If I had any recommendation for travel in 2024, it's time to break free from the crowd and discover these hidden European treasures. Here are 7 off-the-beaten-path destinations, including a slice of Albania's beauty and some unspoiled Greek gems.

And hey, before I forget: Follow my Facebook page for more tips and inspiration.

Sarandë, Albania: Where History Meets Azure Waters

Tucked along the Albanian Riviera, Sarandë offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Explore the UNESCO-listed Butrint National Park, a historic city boasting ancient ruins and a vibrant ecosystem. Don't miss the Blue Eye Spring, a striking turquoise pool. Stay at Marpunta Resort, a luxury option that perfectly captures the coastal vibe. For whatever reason, some people can’t get used to the idea of Albania, but it’s a beautiful country that you can visit for half the price of Greece. That being said, you can combine the best of both worlds but hopping on a ferry over to Corfu from Sarande. It only takes about 90 minutes.

Paros, Greece: A Slice of Cycladic Life

Trade the tourist crowds for Paros' laid-back charm. Roam through Parikia, the island's capital, where white-washed buildings and colorful bougainvilleas create a picturesque scene. Discover the iconic Panagia Ekatontapiliani Church, then unwind at the fishing village of Naoussa. Enjoy a comfortable stay at Mr. and Mrs. White Paros, a boutique hotel blending tranquility and style. Paros is one of my personal favorite places.

Puglia, Italy: Rustic Elegance

Head to Puglia, Italy's rustic gem in the south. Alberobello's trulli houses are a sight to behold, while Ostuni's quaint streets beg to be explored. Rest at Masseria Torre Maizza, an upscale accommodation where history meets modern luxury.

Ronda, Spain: Andalusian Splendor

Escape to Ronda, a captivating city perched on a gorge in Andalusia. The Puente Nuevo bridge is a marvel connecting the old and new parts of the city. Dive into history at the Mondragón Palace, now a museum. Stay comfortably at Hotel La Fuente de la Higuera, offering stunning vistas and top-notch amenities.

Porto, Portugal: Port Wine and More

Shift your focus from Lisbon to Porto, a blend of history and modern life. Walk the colorful streets of the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Experience a port wine tasting along the Douro River. Enjoy your stay at the the Intercontinental Porto, Palacio das Cardosas, a classic Virtuoso hotel with modern comforts.

Kotor, Montenegro: Adriatic Majesty

Experience the fjord-like beauty of Kotor, Montenegro's hidden gem. Wander through the medieval streets of the Old Town and hike the city walls for panoramic views. Find relaxation at the nearby One & Only Portonovi, an elegant choice offering luxury and tranquility.

Ravello, Italy: Amalfi's Tranquil Neighbor

While the Amalfi Coast draws a crowd, Ravello offers a quieter escape. Explore the Villa Cimbrone gardens with stunning coastal views. Catch a classical music performance at the Ravello Festival. Retreat to the Belmond Hotel Caruso for a comfortable stay overlooking the blue waters.

Pack your bags and set off on an adventure that breaks away from the usual destinations. These undiscovered European spots offer a refreshing change of pace, combining history, natural beauty, and comfortable stays for a travel experience worth remembering.
